This project is located at Beyond, a multi award winning, sustainable residential development between Port Elliot & Victor Harbor on S.A.'s Fleurieu Peninsula. AGD's director Margit Wright designed the environmentally sensitive, energy efficient display home and the surrounding garden in concert with the landscape design for the entire 90 acre Beyond site. The high quality of the project has been recognised with awards from Master Builders Association, Housing Industry Association & The Landscape Association of South Australia.

The design intent was to showcase the display home's environmentally sustainable, low maintenance yet inspiring garden.  The style is contemporary with a relaxed Australian feel to complement the architectural character of the home and surrounding landscape.

Materials were selected based on their environmental credentials, therefore recycled materials or products with low embodied energy were used and most were sourced locally.  The garden respects an Australian vernacular and the locality's relaxed 'beach meet countryside' character.

At the entry to the house is a clever environmentally conscious water feature made from an aged , rusted chain which has strong sculptural appeal.  A meandering dry creek was designed for visual interest and to provide a connection to the wider landscape.  Also functional, it captures and disperses excess stormwater.

The garden is designed to be appreciated from the internal living spaces.  Long views to the wider landscape (surrounding reserves, ponds & wetlands) have been considered and appear to be framed by the plantings. Large scale timber and glass doors slide back to enable easy flow for entertaining and cross ventilation.   This wonderful indoor/outdoor connection is reinforced by the polished concrete patio floor which seamlessly flows on from the internal living spaces.

The garden includes a mix of low water use exotic and native plants as well as indigenous species, all carefully selected to provide year round interest. Hardy exotic, deciduous trees allow maximum solar gain to the energy efficient house during the winter months (this being particularly important on the northern side of the home). They also reinforce a soft leafy character which softens the hardscape.
